Clinical Research Studies

The rationale and specific goal of this research is to build a database of patients undergoing the Urolift or Rezum procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) treatment at NYU Winthrop Hospital (NYUWH). The most common treatment for BPH in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is medicinal treatment. In the event that the medicinal treatment fails or the patients have unwanted side effects, the standard of care is surgical treatment via a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Recently, minimally invasive surgical techniques have emerged which reduce the morbidity and dysfunction commonly associated with TURP procedure. These minimally invasive techniques include thermo-ablative strategies using water vapor (Rezum), evaporization or microwave and radiofrequencies, or mechanical strategies including intraprostatic stents and the prostatic urethral lift (Urolift). In this database, we will focus on the outcomes of patients undergoing the Urolift or Rezum treatments, as those treatments are currently implemented in our clinical practice. We believe that collecting and evaluating this information will allow us to improve our assessments of the best methods of treatment available for each patient.
