A randomized trial of topical corticosteroid use for prevention of recurrence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratitis

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Herpesviral Ocular Disease
  • Age: Between 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Subjects capable of giving informed consent
    2. Subjects diagnosed with a history of herpetic eye disease
    3. Three or more episodes of HSV keratitis or iridocyclitis based on medical record documentation of episodes with infectious epithelial keratitis, stromal keratitis, endotheliitis, or iridocyclitis.
    4. OR
    5. Prior history of HSV keratitis or iridocyclitis based on medical record documentation of episode of infectious epithelial keratitis, stromal keratitis, endotheliitis, or iridocyclitis and corneal scarring in the central 4mm zone.
    OR 4b) Prior history of HSV keratitis based on medical record documentation of episode of infectious epithelial keratitis, immune stromal keratitis with or without epithelial ulceration, endothelitis, or iridocyclitis and corneal scarring in the central 4mm zone.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Subjects who are pregnant or nursing or intend to become pregnant or nurse in the next two years will be excluded from the study
    2. Subjects who have allergy to acyclovir, valacyclovir, prednisolone acetate, prednisolone sodium phosphate, or any components of the formulations
    3. Subjects who are incarcerated
    4. Subjects unable to give informed consent.
    5. Subjects with systemic medical problems who do not agree to have continued medical follow-up.
    6. History of topical corticosteroids to the eyelids or ocular surface of the involved eye within the prior 30 days prior to enrollment.
    7. with 3 or more episodes of uveitis in the past 12 months that is not thought to be secondary to HSV.
    8. History of keratoplasy or keratorefractive surgery of the involved eye
    9. History of glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy or tube-shunt surgery) of the involved eye.
    10. History of systemic steroid use within the prior 30 days.
    11. Unable to comply with the study protocol.
    12. Subjects with an active episode of infectious epithelial keratitis defined as corneal vesicles, dendritic ulcer, geographic ulcer, or marginal ulcer at time of enrollment.
