The Role of Residual Hearing in Cochlear Implant Outcomes

Brief description of study

The purpose of the study is to learn more about how cochlear implants benefit patients who can hear some things with hearing aids or without their implant. This observational study will examine residual hearing in cochlear implant patients to determine how it affects performance with the device. Three groups will participate: normal hearing listeners, hearing impaired individuals without a cochlear implant and hearing impaired individuals with a cochlear implant. Behavioral tests of residual hearing will take place before and after implantation. Performance on these tests will be compared to normal hearing controls. The primary objective is to determine how residual hearing affects cochlear implant outcomes. Secondary objectives include determining the contribution of residual hearing to electro-acoustic hearing and designing new assessments for residual hearing.
