Assessment of Intolerance to Flow Reversal and Clamping of Internal Carotid Artery

Brief description of study

Carotid artery stenosis is a narrowing of the carotid arteries, the two major arteries that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. This disease occurs when fatty, waxy deposits build up in one of the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are blood vessels located on each side of your neck (carotid arteries). This buildup of plaque (atherosclerosis) may restrict blood flow to your brain. By either removing plaque causing the narrowing in the artery, or inserting a stent to open the artery, your doctor can improve blood flow in your carotid artery and reduce your risk of stroke. The purpose of this study is to learn more about blood flow to the brain during these two procedures by drawing and analyzing samples of your blood collected before, during, and after your operation. We will measure arterial blood gas (ABG) and the biomarkers NSE and S100B. A biomarker is a measurable indicator of the severity or presence of some disease state.
