Quality of Life of Patients with Single-Sided Deafness Treated with Cochlear Implantation

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Single Sided Deafness
  • Age: Between 0 Year(s) - 18 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    Group 1 Case:
    1. Participants with clinical diagnosis of single-sided deafness or asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss based on lack of benefit from amplification and pure tones in the severe-profound range
    2. Previous unilateral cochlear implant insertion for the above indication
    3. If participants are <18 years old, parent/guardian is able to provide appropriate telephone consent
    4. Participants are medically and mentally fit to provide appropriate telephone consent to participate
    5. Participants speak English
    Group 1 Control:
    1. Participants with clinical diagnosis of single-sided deafness or asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss
    2. Previous unilateral cochlear implant insertion for the above indication
    3. If participants are <18 years old, parent/guardian is able to provide appropriate telephone consent
    4. Participants are medically and mentally fit to provide appropriate telephone consent to participate
    5. Participants speak English
    Group 2:
    1. Participants with clinical diagnosis of single-sided deafness or asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss
    2. Current patients of the NYULH Cochlear Implant Center eligible to receive a unilateral cochlear implant for the above indication
    3. If participants are <18 years old, parent/guardian is able to provide appropriate telephone consent
    4. Participants are medically and mentally fit to provide appropriate telephone consent to participate
    5. Participants speak English

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Participants with no clinical record of clinical diagnosis of single-sided deafness or asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss
    2. Do not have a parent/guardian able to provide informed, verbal consent
    3. Participants who are medically or mentally unfit to provide assent
    4. Non-English speaking participants
    5. Participants who are less than 1 month of age
