Human Epilepsy Project 3: Newly Diagnosed Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Epilepsy
  • Age: Between 12 - 40 Years
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Participants who are between the age =13 years and =40 years at time of enrollment
    2. Participants who were between the age =8 years and =30 years at time of seizure onset
    3. Participants with clinical seizure(s) and history consistent with IGE.
    4. Occurrence of at least 1 seizure of any type in the last 6 months
    5. Participants must have one of the following:
      • Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCSs) alone accompanied by generalized spike/wave of >3 Hz on EEG
      • GTCSs with a history of absence and/or myoclonus, accompanied by generalized spike/wave of >3 Hz on EEG
      • GTCSs associated with a history of absence and/or myoclonus, not accompanied by generalized spike/wave of >3 Hz on EEG and adjudicated for enrollment
      • A clear history of absence and/or myoclonus, accompanied by generalized spike/wave of >3 Hz on EEG
    6. Participants who have a complete medication history since initiation of treatment, including doses and date of initiation available to study team
    7. Participants who have no other cause of epilepsy (e.g. traumatic brain injury)
    8. AED treatment (for seizures) instituted not more than 6 months before enrollment

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Participants with focal epilepsy
    2. Participants with generalized/focal epilepsy mixed syndromes
    3. Those with progressive neurological disorder
    4. Participants who have epileptic or developmental encephalopathy
    5. Participants with major medical co-morbidities
    6. Autism Spectrum Disorder
    7. Participants with history of chronic drug or alcohol abuse
    8. Seizures only during pregnancy
    9. Participants with history of previous or current significant psychiatric disorder that would interfere with study requirements
