Type I Interferon in COVID-19

Brief description of study

The purpose of this research study is to look at the genes (DNA) and biomarkers in the blood of patients that test COVID-positive or are COVID-19 negative. The COVID-19 infection presents differently between children and adults, and it ranges from asymptomatic to pernio-like lesions known as “COVID toes” to acute respiratory distress (ARDS) and death. Having a better understanding of these biomarkers and the factors that lead to severe COVID-19 infection is important as it can improve current public health efforts and inform novel treatment and prevention strategies. Subjects who do not have COVID-19 (healthy controls) will also be asked to participate. Their biomarkers and genetic makeup will be compared to those COVID-19 positive patients to find potential differences that may help us better understand the factors that influence severity.
