EFFECTS OF CONTRALATERAL STRENGTH TRAINING ON POSTOPERATIVE STRENGTH DEFICITS IN THE IMMOBILIZED LOWER EXTREMITY

Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to determine if immediate postoperative strength training in the non-surgical arm or leg reduces postoperative loss of strength in the operative arm or leg, which will be immobilized following surgery. This will be assessed with a combination of surveys that ask about your knee or arm function and strength testing on a Biodex isokinetic machine, which is a specialized machine that provides computer-controlled resistance and measures the force that the subject applies to the apparatus. This research study will compare the subjects who perform the typical physical therapy rehabilitation protocol plus the non-surgical arm/leg strength training to the subjects who perform only the typical physical therapy protocol (the standard of care).
