A Feasibility Study Examining Conscious Awareness and Mental and Cognitive Experiences During Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest

Brief description of study

Some people who have been unconscious for any reason have sometimes described having certain memories and thought processes during the event. They may have seen or heard things that relate to the events taking place around them. Very little is known about people’s experiences during unconsciousness brought on by the heart stopping temporarily. This research study will look at whether people have any memories and thought processes during a surgical procedure known as Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest (DHCA). DHCA is a surgical procedure where the body is cooled in order to stop the circulation of blood. These surgeries are often performed to repair the blood vessels around the heart.
