A Study to Evaluate the Degree of Steatosis in Subjects with any Feature of the Metabolic Syndrome in Primary Care or Endocrine Clinics for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) Utilizing Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography (VCTE) and Controll
Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to find out if any of the volunteers have Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) which can be diagnosed through a new method that does not involve any kind of surgery or biopsy. This new method uses a machine called FibroScan. The FibroScan is an FDA cleared device that is currently used in your liver doctor’s office to measure how much scar tissue is in your liver. Along with this exam, any associated screening methods that do not require surgery to identify NAFLD will also be used to confirm is you have NAFLD. In addition, if this disease is identified you will be advised on the best way to prevent disease progression. The earlier a patient is identified with NAFLD, the less likely the disease is to progress into Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) – a more severe liver disease.
