The Effects of Perioperative Nutritional Optimization on Lumbar Spine Surgery

Brief description of study

Nearly 200,000 lumbar spine surgeries are performed yearly in the United States. There is a lack of literature regarding preoperative optimization of patient nutrition. Patients will be randomized into two treatment arms: oral nutritional interventional protocol using Ensure protein shakes daily for six weeks perioperatively and a control group. Our first goal is to assess differences in postoperative hematologic markers of nutritional status among the two groups. Our second goal is to identify and differences in complication rates, readmissions, and reoperations among the two cohorts.
