Prospective MRI Evaluation of Control Subjects for Comparison to Patients with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Brief description of study

This innovative study aims to develop methods for detection of causes of focal epilepsy beyond the limitations of conventional MRI by using diffusion kurtosis analysis of the diffusion MRI obtained as part of the normal clinical MRI protocol. This will be valuable to patients and clinicians by potentially increasing our ability to identify targets for surgical resection. Overall there are improved clinical outcomes post epilepsy surgery when targeted by MRI pre-operatively. Prospective acquisition of advanced brain MRI techniques in control subjects will be compared to retrospective MRI acquisitions on patients with known temporal lobe epilepsy to evaluate the utility diffusion kurtosis analysis of clinical diffusion MRI data in identifying anatomic correlation for focal epilepsy.
