Personalized Dietary Management in Type 2 Diabetes Lay title: The DIAbetes TELEmedicine MEDiterranean Diet Study (DIATELEMED)

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Type 2 Diabetes
  • Age: Between 21 Year(s) - 80 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Diagnosed with early-stage T2D defined as HbA1c 6.5-8% and managed for the past 3 months on a diabetes regimen that included lifestyle plus metformin
    2. Those who are willing and able to use a smart phone to self- monitor their diet and to attend WebEx sessions

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Those who have been prescribed antibiotics or antifungals in the past 3 months
    2. Those who have been prescribed diabetic medications other than metformin
    3. Those who have been prescribed weight loss medications
    4. Participants who have chronic use of steroids or immunosuppressants
    5. Use of atypical antipsychotics
    6. Undergoing chemotherapy
    7. Pregnant, planning to become pregnantd during the study period or become pregnant during the study
    8. Those who have a chronic disease that affects energy/glucose metabolism
    9. Participants who require special dietary management (end-stage kidney disease, cirrhosis, HIV)
    10. Those who are unable or unwilling to provide informed consent
    11. Are unable to participate meaningfully in an intervention that involves self-monitoring using software available in English
    12. Are unwilling to accept randomization assignment
    13. Have limited control over diet
    14. Have previously had bariatric surgery, or are unwilling to delay bariatric surgery for the next 7 months,
    15. Are unable to walk without a walker or cane for 2 city blocks,
    16. Have been diagnosed with a chronic active inflammatory or neoplastic disease in the past 3 years,
    17. Have been diagnosed with a chronic gastrointestinal disorder
    18. Have an active substance use disorder
    19. Have an HbA1c <6.5%
