Lung and Diaphragm Ultrasound in Dyspneic Patients

Brief description of study

Shortness of breath is one of the most common symptoms experienced by patients with lung conditions. Patients with shortness of breath frequently undergo many tests to figure out why they are short of breath. Ultrasound – a type of imaging test that can be done in a clinic with a small handheld device – is not used very often to work up shortness of breath. However, it is easy and very safe to use, does not involve radiation, and can be repeated frequently at a low cost. This study will use ultrasound to assess the lungs and diaphragms (one of the key muscles involved in breathing) of clinic patients with shortness of breath, and to then compare the ultrasound findings to those from other imaging/testing like chest X-rays and cat scans. If ultrasound is able to identify the same findings as these other more expensive or risky tests, those tests may become avoidable in the future.
