Targeting Hyaluronan Accumulation Through Exercise in T2DM

Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of exercise on hyaluronan (HA) accumulation in calf muscles. HA is seen in skeletal muscle tissue of people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and is associated with increased muscle stiffness, decreased strength, decreased ankle joint mobility, and decreased physical This study involves a 10-week exercise program that has been shown to be effective in people with T2DM. Our hope is that the moderate intensity exercise program will improve blood sugar control, reduce inflammation, and reduce physical inactivity, which may decrease HA accumulation and improve muscle stiffness and strength. The novel research component of our study is the use of non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging to study skeletal muscle before and after exercise intervention to see if there are changes in HA accumulation function.
