TMS and Fear Extinction

Brief description of study

The purpose of this research is to study how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) impacts the way our brains learn to fear and extinguish those fears. TMS is a tool used to non-invasively manipulate brain circuits, such as the fear learning and extinction circuit. TMS uses a magnetic coil (metal wire wound into a coil) to send pulses to stimulate your brain. This machine is routinely used by scientists to study the brain. This procedure does not use any radiation (x-rays), and there will be no direct physical contact with your brain. There has been much clinical success applying TMS to psychiatric conditions, and we want to explore whether specifying the location and timing of the TMS will further improve fear extinction memory, especially for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We are currently looking for participants with no significant current/past psychiatric diagnosis.
