Pilot prospective study evaluating changes observed in splanchnic and cerebral tissue oxygenation in relation to the stored age of transfused blood in preterm infants
Brief description of study
The purpose of this research study is to see if there is any difference in the change in the body’s oxygen levels that takes place after a transfusion happens based on the length of time that the blood is stored prior to being used. The study involves placement of sensors on the skin (similar to sensors meant to measure oxygen saturation in blood), which are then connected to an INVOS 5100C monitor to measure the oxygen levels in the brain and intestines. This device is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared for monitoring of tissue oxygen levels in infants.
