Brain Effects of Lifetime Racial/Ethnic Discrimination on the LC-NE Function and the Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Healthy Volunteers
  • Age: Between 55 Year(s) - 75 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR)=0 and a MoCA>24
    2. All subjects will have had a minimum of 12 years of education
    3. An informed family member or life-partner will be interviewed to confirm the reliability of the subject interview
    4. Self-identified as African-American black or non-Hispanic white

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. History of brain tumor, MRI evidence of brain damage or brain disease including significant trauma, hydrocephalus, seizures, mental retardation or other serious neurological disorder
    2. History of alcoholism or drug abuse
    3. History of psychiatric illness
    4. Lifelong depression and anxiety will be allowed as long as there has been no active depressive episode within the last two years
    5. Geriatric Depression Scale(Yesavage 1988) (short form)>5
    6. Insulin-dependent diabetes
    7. Evidence of clinically relevant unstable cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine or hematological conditions
    8. Physical impairment of such severity as to adversely affect the validity of psychological testing
    9. Any prosthetic devices (e.g., pacemaker or surgical clips) that constitutes a hazard for MRI imaging
    10. Medications affecting cognition
    11. Antidepressants
    12. History of a first-degree family member with early onset (age <60 years) dementia
    13. Self-identified as other ethnicity not black or non-Hispanic white
    14. Participants who are not able to undergo MRI or meets the exclusion criteria for MRIs
