DIFFIR: Geriatric DIstal Femur: FIxation versus Replacement

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Isolated Fracture Of The Distal Femur
  • Age: Between 65 years - 100 years
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Isolated fracture of the distal femur (AO/OTA Class 33 fractures)
    2. Fracture is acute (within 1 week from time of injury)
    3. Participant was ambulatory (with or without walking aids) in the community and at home prior to the injury
    4. Independent or moderately frail with score of 3 to 6 on the validated Clinical Frailty Scale
    5. Participant is able to read and understand the consent form document, or an interpreter is available to the patient at the time of consent and follow-up
    6. Participant or substitute decision maker is able to provide written informed consent to participate in the study

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Active infection around the fracture (soft tissue or bone)
    2. Open fracture
    3. Bilateral femur fracture
    4. Major vascular injuries requiring intervention, compartment syndrome and major neurologic injuries
    5. Pathological fracture excluding osteoporosis
    6. Previous ORIF of the distal femur or proximal tibia or total/partial knee arthroplasty
    7. Current or previous extensor mechanism (patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon, or patella fracture) disruption or repair
    8. Poly-trauma status (Injury Severity Score>15) or any associated major injuries of the lower extremities that may hinder post-operative ambulation
    9. Previous medical diagnosis of dementia
    10. Medical contraindication to surgery
