A prospective observational study describing splanchnic NIRS values in infants with Neonatal Encephalopathy undergoing Therapeutic Hypothermia and receiving enteral feeds.

Brief description of study

The purpose of this research study is to determine whether providing enteral feeds to infants undergoing cooling (therapeutic hypothermia) therapy will have an effect on the course of the child’s illness. We also plan to measure the oxygenation of the splanchnic vessels which are the bloody supply for the intestines, as measured through NIRS monitoring. NIRS is measured through a sticker placed on the child’s belly. This study will last about 2 years and will involve about your child’s neonatal intensive care unit stay. While in this study you will be asked to consent for us to administer enteral feeds to your child for the first three days of life while they are undergoing cooling therapy. The study will collect information about your child’s illness to monitor your child’s response to the feeds.
