Epigenetic Characterization of Immune Cells in Parkinson s disease and Prodromal Stages (EpiGEN PD) Study

Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to understand how environmental exposures (such as living in an urban or rural environment, consuming alcohol, cigarette smoke, or taking certain medications) and genetics can interact and lead to development of diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). We aim to characterize the environmental exposure of a group of subjects at risk of developing PD, which are defined by clinical features such as decreased sense of smell or dream enchantment suggestive of a sleep problem called REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). By connecting clinical information with environmental exposures and comparing to data of subjects with and without PD, we aim to identify associations between specific environmental factors and changes in the genetic information in cells of the immune system.
