Patient Participants:
- BMI: 18 to 35 kg/m2.
- Occlusion of cervical internal carotid artery, or high-grade steno-occlusive disease (>70% diameter reduction) of the intracranial ICA and MCA as documented by computer tomography angiography (CTA) or contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA).
- Asymptomatic patients identified incidentally during routine clinical evaluation or symptomatic patients with history of transient ischemic attack or non-disabling stroke involving the ICA or MCA territory within the prior 180 days.
- Ability to perform daily life activities independently.
You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

Healthy Participants:
- Standard contraindications to MRI: implanted metal devices, tattoos with metallic ink, pacemaker, metal implants, renal impairment, cerebral aneurysm clip, cochlear implant, presence of shrapnel in strategic locations, metal in the eye, claustrophobia, presence of electronic devices or ferromagnetic metallic foreign or implanted object that could constitute a hazard during MRI or any other contraindications to MRI.
- Individuals with past or present neurological disorder.
- Individuals with with alcohol or drug dependency.
- Individuals unable to sign informed consent or to comply with study assessments (cognitive impairment, etc.).
- History of planned cerebrovascular bypass surgery or intracranial stenting.
- Presence of potential sources of cardiogenic embolism, including recent myocardial infarction (53 weeks previous), known atrial fibrillation, mitral stenosis, mitral valve prosthesis, dilated cardiomyopathy, sick sinus syndrome or subacute bacterial endocarditis.
