A PHASE II RANDOMIZED OPEN LABEL MULTI-CENTER STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF ELCTRONIC CIGARETTES ON SMOKING HARM REDUCTION IN CIGARETTE SMOKERS WITH SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS.

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Cigarette Smoking
    Serious Mental Illness
  • Age: Between 21 Year(s) - 75 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Currently smokes 5 or more cigarettes per day.
    2. Has severe mental illness (SMI) diagnosis (including Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, Major depression, and Post traumatic stress disorder).
    3. Interested in reducing combustible cigarette smoking but not necessarily trying to quit.
    4. Own a mobile phone or have regular access to a mobile phone.
    5. Able to provide an additional contact to improve follow-up rates.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Does not speak English or Spanish.
    2. Is Pregnant or breastfeeding.
    3. Not able to provide consent.
    4. Used tobacco other than combustible cigarettes in the past 2 weeks (e.g., EC, cigarillo).
    5. Currently engaged in an attempt to quit combustible cigarettes.
    6. Currently on Bupropion (e.g. Wellbutrin, Zyban).
    7. Reports having severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma (i.e., with exacerbation requiring hospitalization or intubation in the prior 6 months).
    8. Change in dose of their psychotropic medication(s) in the last 14 days.
    9. Meeting DSM-IV criteria for illicit/alcohol drug dependency.
    10. Past month suicidal ideation/suicide attempt and/or psychiatric hospitalization in the last 30 days.
    11. Currently incarcerated.
