Assessing dysarthria severity before and after neurosurgical procedures: A prospective longitudinal study in patients with refractory movement disorders

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Parkinson's Disease And Essential Tremor
  • Age: Between 18 Year(s) - 80 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Patients who are clinically selected to undergo unilateral or bilateral DBS surgery targeting the subthalamic nucleus (STN) for refractory PD.
    2. Patients who are clinically selected to undergo HIFU surgery targeting the ventral intermediate thalamus (ViM) for essential tremor (ET).
    3. Patients will be considered if they are undergoing a unilateral or a bilateral HIFU surgery.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. No other symptomatic brain pathologies in pre-operative MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).
    2. Neurological, rheumatologic, orthopedic or other medical conditions that impairs hand movement independent of PD or ET.
    3. Allergy to adhesive tape or silver, which is in the EEG (electroencephalogram) leads.
    4. Members of a vulnerable population.
    5. Healthy control group should have no diagnosis of a neurological disorder or speech-language deficit.
