Ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI of Cerebrovascular Diseases

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Multiple Sclerosis
    Hypertension/arteriosclerosis
  • Age: Between 19 Year(s) - 70 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Subjects between ages 19-70 without regard to gender, ethnic background, or minority status.
    2. Subjects with known or suspected vascular diseases.
    3. Healthy control subjects .
    4. Women who are not pregnant or breast feeding.
    5. Subjects will be selected on the basis of their willingness and ability to participate and on the likelihood of completing the study.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. MRI exclusion:
    2. Electrical implants such as cardiac pacemakers or perfusion pumps
    3. Ferromagnetic implants such as aneurysm clips, surgical clips, prostheses, artificial heart valves with steel parts, metal fragments, shrapnel, bullets, tattoos near the eye, or steel implants
    4. Claustrophobia
    5. History of seizures
      Ferumoxytol Injection:
    1. Pregnancy
    2. Breast-feeding
    3. Hemochromatosis or thalassemia
    4. Cirrhosis
    5. Blood transfusion within the previous 2 months
    6. Major surgery within the previous month
    7. Anemia not caused by iron deficiency
    8. Use of parenteral or oral iron therapy (not including over-the-counter dietary supplements) within the previous 2 weeks, unless further administration of ferumoxytol is clinically indicated
    9. Use of parenteral or oral iron therapy (not including over-the-counter dietary supplements) within the previous 2 weeks, unless further administration of ferumoxytol is clinically indicated
    10. Known hypersensitivity to ferumoxytol or any of its components (e.g. mannitol)
    11. Scheduled diagnostic MRI with contrast (unrelated to the present study) within the following 4 weeks
      Gadolinium Injection:
    1. Pregnancy
    2. Breast-feeding
    3. Kidney disease with estimated GFR < 30 ml/min/1.73m2
    4. Known hypersensitivity to any Gad-based contrast agent
