DISCOVERY of Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Youth Study

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Obesity
    Type 2 Diabetes
  • Age: Between 9 Year(s) - 14 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. Children in the early and middle stages of puberty (age 9-13 years for girls, 10-14 years for boys).
    2. Overweight or obesity.
    3. Family history of T2D in 1st or 2nd degree relative.
    4. Personal exposure to maternal diabetes (i.e., gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or mother with type 1 or type 2 diabetes while pregnant with participant).
    5. Personal history of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), small for gestational age (SGA), or low birth weight.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Diabetes.
    2. Conditions predisposing to diabetes or altering the trajectory of puberty (transplant, cancer, Down Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, Klinefelter Syndrome, ovarian/testicular failure, etc.)
    3. Prior treatment with insulin.
    4. Use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist or any weight loss medications in the 6 weeks prior to enrollment, or planning treatment with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist or any weight loss medications.
    5. Use of metformin or any glucose lowering medication for a reason other than treatment of diabetes (e.g., for PCOS) in the 6 weeks prior to enrollment.
    6. History of bariatric surgery or currently planning bariatric surgery.
    7. Current pregnancy or currently planning pregnancy.
    8. Individuals who do not speak English or Spanish.
