Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

• Conditions:
  Essential Hypertension
  Diabetes
• Age: Between 8 years - 18 years
• Gender: Male or Female

• Other Inclusion Criteria:
  

  1. Able to understand study objectives and procedures
  2. Healthy controls (siblings of participants, pre-op patients)
  3. Patients with type 1 diabetes. These patients will have evidence of diabetes-associated autoantibodies and meet the WHO criteria, namely fasting blood glucose concentration concentration =126 mg/dl, 2-hour blood glucose of > 200 mg/dl on a standard Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) or a random blood glucose concentration = 200 mg/dl with symptoms of hyperglycemia.
  4. Patients with an elevated BMI but with a normal BP, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c level, normal eGFR, and no albuminuria. This group will be equally divided into children who are overweight BMI 90-95th percentile or obese BMI >95th percentile
  5. Patients with essential hypertension defined as a systolic or diastolic BP exceeding the 95th percentile for age and gender or 120/80 without an identifiable secondary cause. These patients will be categorized by the number of the following features that are present: (1) microalbuminuria; (2) elevated BP (3) hypertriglyceridemia; (4) abnormal BMI; (5) increased waist circumference

  
  

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

• 1. Evidence of hepatic disease defined as AST/ALT =3X ULN
  2. Cardiac or pulmonary disease except for asthma well controlled without the need for oral corticosteroids
  3. Renal disease defined as Glomerular Filtration Rate <90 or urine protein:creatinine ratio >2
  4. Fever in the preceding 5 days
  5. Known infection with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, or Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  6. Diagnosis of malignancy requiring treatment within preceding 12 months
  7. Pregnancy
  8. Chronic use of anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive medications
  9. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosis
  10. Immunodeficiency, inflammatory or immunosuppressive medications
  11. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosis
  12. Immunodeficiency
