Analysis of Facial Motion Using Digital Image Speckle Correlation Following Acoustic Neuroma Surgery

Brief description of study

This study is looking to enroll patients with an Acoustic Neuroma or vestibular schwannoma, which is a benign tumor. Acoustic neuromas are uncommon and as the tumor grows it can affect the nearby cranial nerves (which controls sensation in the face), and facial nerves (which is a bundle of nerves that controls the muscles of the face that affect facial expressions). The purpose of this study is to determine if acoustic neuromas influence facial nerve function by using digital photography. The technique called Digital Speckle Correlation (DISC) will be used to detect facial motion. DISC calculates facial motion from two pictures taken in quick succession. By comparing the normal side of the face with the affected side of the face, investigators hope to determine whether digital imaging and analysis can be used to predict patient outcome following acoustic neuroma surgery.
