Modulating movement intention via cortical stimulation in healthy subjects and patients with psychogenic movement disorders and non-epileptic seizures

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Psychogenic Movement Disorder
  • Age: Between 18 years - 65 years
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    Healthy Subjects:
    1. Subjects between the ages of 18 and 65 years
    2. Subjects with Score at least 25 out of 30 on the MOCA
    3. Subjects who are right-handed in most cases, except when serving as controls for left-handed patients
    4. Subjects who are fluent in English
    PMD and PNES Subjects:
    1. Subjects between the ages of 18 and 65 years
    2. Subjects with Score at least 25 out of 30 on the MOCA
    3. Subjects who are fluent in English
    4. Subjects with the clinical assesment requirements of PMD or PNES diagnosis reviewed and confirmed by a certified physician
    5. Subjects who are unlikely to require treatment and/or dosage changes for 3-6 months following screening

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

  • Healthy Subjects:
    1. Subjects with any history of a significant neurological disorder, which may interfere with the interpretation of study data, as determined by the PI
    2. Subjects with chronic or progressive medical condition
    3. Subjects who have any history of traumatic brain injury or significant head trauma
    4. Subjects currently meets criteria for substance abuse or dependence
    5. Subjects with history of any psychotic disorder or other psychiatric condition which may interfere with data interpretation
    6. Subjects who are pregnant
    7. Subjects with metal or devices in the head, including neurostimulators or metal foreign bodies
    8. Subjects with any other implanted metal device, including pacemaker, spinal cord stimulator, VNS.
    9. Subjects with any other ferromagnetic substance in the body that may increase study risk
    10. Subjects who are taking tricyclic antidepressant or antiepileptic medications or CNS active drugs under “strong potential hazard” list in Rossi et al., 2009
    11. Subjects who have current diagnosis of any inflammatory or autoimmune disorder within last 6 months
    PMD and PNES Subjects:
    1. Subjects who have any history of traumatic brain injury or significant head trauma
    2. Subjects with diagnosis of organic seizure disorder, including febrile seizures and tonic-clonic seizures
    3. Subjects who have neurological disorder other than PMD and PNES including stroke, fainting spells or syncope of unknown cause(s)
    4. Subjects with major or unstable medical illness
    5. Subjects who have metal or devices in the head, including neurostimulators or metal foreign bodies
    6. Subjects who are taking tricyclic antidepressant or antiepileptic medications or CNS active drugs under “strong potential hazard” list in Rossi et al., 2009
    7. Subjects with diagnosis of dementia, or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) =24
    8. Subjects with recurrent visual hallucinations, within the past 6 months
    9. Subjects have history of significant uncontrollable movements of the head
    10. Subjects with any clinically significant abnormality on vital signs
