Functional Brain Imaging in Healthy Volunteers and Neurological Patients to study Cognitive Functions

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Epilepsy
  • Age: Between 18 Year(s) - 65 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    • Healthy Subjects: Score at least 26 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA).
    • Epilepsy Subjects: Score at least 26 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA), have well-controlled temporal lobe epilepsy.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

  • Healthy Subjects:
    1. Any history of a neurological disorder
    2. Chronic or progressive medical condition
    3. Any history of severe traumatic brain injury
    4. Metal or devices in the head, including neurostimulators of metal foreign bodies
    5. Any other implanted metal device, including pacemaker, spinal cord stimulator, VNS.
    6. Any other ferromagnetic substance in the body (including tattoos, dental prosthetics, etc).
    7. Taking a medication which may lower the seizure threshold within the 4 weeks prior to the start of the study, including use of neuroleptic (esp. clozapine), antibiotic (penicillin, cephalosporins), and bronchodilating medications.
    8. Pregnancy
    9. Meets DSM-IV criteria for substance abuse or dependence,
    10. History of any psychotic disorder or other psychiatric condition which may interfere with data interpretation
    11. Any condition that would preclude their having an MRI or present unnecessary risk (e.g., brain surgery of uncertain type, etc).
    Epilepsy Subjects:
    1. Subjects must NOT have an epileptogenic focus near the proposed stimulation site [i.e., left lateral parietal region (P3) Chronic or progressive medical condition]
    2. History of traumatic brain injury or significant head trauma,
    3. History of any other significant neurologic disorder (e.g., stroke, brain aneurysm, Parkinson’s Disease, brain tumors)
    4. Meets DSM-IV criteria for substance abuse or dependence,
    5. History of any psychotic disorder or other psychiatric condition which may interfere with data interpretation
    6. Contraindication for an MRI exam (e.g., claustrophobia, surgical or vascular implants, pregnancy, pacemakers, neurostimulators, history of metal in the eyes, orthodontia or extensive bridgework, electrical implants such as cardiac pacemakers or perfusion pumps, ferromagnetic implants such as aneurysm clips, surgical clips, prostheses, artificial hearts, valves with steel parts, metal fragments, shrapnel, tattoos near the eye, or steel implants), Any condition that would preclude their having an MRI or present unnecessary risk (e.g., brain surgery of uncertain type, etc).
