Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

• Conditions:
  Type 2 Diabetes
• Age: Between 35 years - 55 years
• Gender: Male or Female

• Other Inclusion Criteria:
  

  1. Type 2 Diabetes (fasting glucose level =126 mg/dl or HbA1c =6.5%)
  2. 100 Diabetic Surgical patients (with BMI = 30 but < 40 kg/m2 to ensure fit in the PET/MRI)
  3. 40 matched Diabetic Control (nonsurgical) subjects with T2D and baseline BMIs =30 and < 40 kg/m2
  4. A diagnosis of depression with remitted symptoms or stable on meds is allowed

  
  

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

• 1. Type 1 diabetes
  2. BMI = 40 kg/m2 or < 30kg/m2
  3. Insulin treatment, which will reduce our eligible subject pool by less than 15%
  4. Significant cardiovascular or cerebrovascular pathology (myocardial infarction; significant angina, claudication; stroke, or TIA) or peripheral neuropathy or history of ulcerations in lower limbs
  5. Baseline HbA1c > 12%
  6. Current or lifetime history of major psychiatric illness, other than treated stable or remitted depression.
  7. Pregnancy
  8. Family history of early-onset dementia
  9. Education less than 8th grade, since that will potentially compromise the validity of the cognitive testing
  10. Presence of pacemakers, metal clips, or any other metal items in the body that would preclude undergoing the MRI scan. Given how central the MRI evaluation is for the science of this study, inability to have the MRI evaluation will be exclusionary.
  11. Medications affecting cognition: Narcotic analgesics or Steroids
