A pilot randomized double-blind sham-controlled study of the combined effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and physical activity on gait and functional mobility in participants with Multiple Sclerosis

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

Conditions: Multiple Sclerosis

Age: Between 18 years - 70 years

Gender: Male or Female

Other Inclusion Criteria:
- Subjects who are between the ages of 18 and 70 years old
- Subjects diagnosed with MS, subtype relapsing-remitting (RR-MS) or secondary-progressive (SP-MS)
- Subjects with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) from 1 to 6.5 with clinically significant gait deviations
- Subjects who are clinically stable
- Subjects who are able to independently walk with or without an assisting device for medium-long distance
- Subjects do not have other associated medical conditions that would prevent participants from performing physical activity
- Subjects able to use study equipment
- Subjects able to commit to 10 sessions of tDCS while performing physical program with baseline and follow-up visits
- Subjects able to understand the informed consent process and provide consent to participate in the study
You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:
-
- Subjects with visual, auditory and motor deficits that would prevent full ability to understand study
- Subjects with primary psychiatric disorder that would influence ability to participate
- Subjects receiving current treatment for epilepsy
- Subjects with uncontrolled headaches and migraines.
- Subjects with history of head trauma or in the neck
- Subjects with any skin disorder/sensitive skin
- Subjects currently having treatment for a communicable skin disorder or over the past 12 months
- Subjects with history of uncontrolled or labile hypertension
- Subjects with other serious uncontrolled medical condition
- Subjects who scored less than 85 on the Wide Range Achievement Test-4th Edition (WRAT-4) Reading Recognition
- Subjects with history of clinically significant abnormalities on electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Subjects wtih chronic medical illness and/or severe ataxia
- Subjects who have botulinum toxin injection within the past 4 months
- Subjects who had functional surgery for lower limb in the past 6 months
- Subjects with alcohol or other substance use disorder
- Subjects who are pregnant or breastfeeding
