The goal of this study is to determine whether the use of antibiotics just before and after sinus surgery can prevent infections after the surgery. Sinuses are colonized by bacteria, and sinus surgery is considered to have a higher risk of infection compared to surgeries in a sterile (no bacterial colonization) part of the body. Therefore, otolaryngologists often prescribe antibiotics for their patients following sinus surgery. However, there is little medical evidence that giving antibiotics after surgery is beneficial, and they may do as much harm as good. We aim to determine whether the use of antibiotics just before and after sinus surgery will decrease infection rates following surgery, and improve sinus and nasal symptoms, and improve findings on the in-office scope examination.
