Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Epilepsy
  • Age: Between 18 Year(s) - 70 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
Inclusion Criteria (Cohort A - epilepsy of unknown cause)
    1. Subjects diagnosed with focal epilepsy
    2. Subjects who are at least 18 years old
    3. Subjects with the onset of epilepsy after age 5
    4. Subjects with no known cause of epilepsy OR presence of hippocampal sclerosis on MRI
    5. Subjects who have brain MRI completed prior to enrollment.
Inclusion Criteria (Cohort B - epilepsy of known cause)
    1. Subjects diagnosed with focal epilepsy
    2. Subjects who are at least 18 years old
    3. Subjects with known cause of epilepsy including any of the following: confirmed viral, bacterial or parasitic CNS infection, traumatic brain injury, stroke, intraventricular hemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, neurocutaneous syndrome, confirmed inborn error of metabolism, confirmed genetic and chromosomal developmental encephalopathy, confirmed genetic epilepsy, malformation of cortical development, neoplasia, neurodegenerative disease
    4. Subjects who have brain MRI completed prior to enrollment.
Inclusion Criteria (Cohort C - idiopathic genetic generalized epilepsy)
    1. Subjects diagnosed with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, juvenile absence epilepsy or generalized tonic-clonic seizures alone)
    2. Subjects who are at least 18 years old
    3. Subjects who have brain MRI completed prior to enrollment.

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

  • Exclusion Criteria (Cohort A - epilepsy of unknown cause)
    1. Subjects who have contraindication for a lumbar puncture (i.e. intracranial mass, bleeding diathesis, spinal developmental anomalies, or local skin infection involving the lower back)
    2. Subjects who have evidence of progressive neurological illness
    3. Subjects who have prior epilepsy surgery
Exclusion Criteria (Cohort B - epilepsy of known cause)
    1. Subjects who have contraindication for a lumbar puncture (i.e. intracranial mass, bleeding diathesis, spinal developmental anomalies, or local skin infection involving the lower back)
    2. Subjects who have prior epilepsy surgery
Exclusion Criteria (Cohort C - idiopathic genetic generalized epilepsy)
