Behavioral and Neural Correlates of Speech Production during Delayed Auditory Feedback in Subthalamic Nucleus: A Prospective Study in Parkinson s Subjects Undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Parkinson's Disease
  • Age: Between 18 Year(s) - 80 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    1. All individuals in this study will be between 18 and 80 years of age
    2. Subjects must have undergone deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or globus pallidus interna (GPi) for management of their medically resistant Parkinson's disease.
    3. Deep Brain Stimulation surgery may/may not be targeting subjects' dominant hemisphere for speech.
    4. Subjects may/may not report a history of stuttering referable to Parkinson's compared to prior to disease onset.
    5. Subjects must demonstrate a positive response to DBS as reflected by subject perception or documented improvement in motor scores (improvement does not have to involve speech).

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. All subjects undergoing this type of surgery undergo CT and MRI imaging, but we are interested only in subjects who have no other brain pathology. Subjects with overt pathology on imaging will be excluded.
    2. Subjects must be at baseline capable of performing the cognitive-motor tasks included in this study. Hence, we will evaluate all subjects using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) test, and all subjects that score within the demented range (<23) will be excluded from the study.
    3. Subjects who have a neurological, rheumatologic, orthopedic or other medical condition that impairs their speech independent of Parkinson 's (as assessed by the investigating team).
    4. Subjects who are not both fluent and literate in English will be excluded from this study.
    5. No members of the vulnerable populations will be included (pregnant women, minors, prisoners).
    6. Subjects who do not have capacity to consent
    7. Subjects who have allergy to adhesive tape or to silver (contained in EEG electrodes).
    8. Subjects who experience strong discomfort when wearing headphones.
