Neurophysiological and Functional Mechanisms of Motor Control and Learning

Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to understand the changes that occur in the brain when it is learning a new motor skill. We are using noninvasive techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), to look at the changes in the brain. TMS uses magnetic pulses to test brain circuitry in a painless way. We are also studying how motor learning ability changes when the brain is stimulated with another noninvasive technique, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). tDCS uses a mild electrical current to make the brain more excitable while you learn. The TMS device (Magstim) and tDCS device (NeuroConn) are considered investigational devices because they are not cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the use in this study, but are able to be used for research purposes.
