Neuroenergetic Adaptations in Alzheimer's Disease: Implications on Amyloid Burden and Cognition

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Alzheimer's Disease
  • Age: Between 70 Year(s) - 85 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    Cognitively Normal (NL) Subject criteria:
    1. Must be fluent in English or demonstrated proficiency in English for non-native speakers to ensure validity of test administration and findings
    2. Must be between the ages of 18 and 85 years old in overall excellent health with normal cognition (CDR=0), and at least high school graduate level education
    3. Must have an informed family member or life-partner (preferably bed-partner) will be interviewed over the phone or on the first or second visit to confirm the reliability of the subject interview.
    4. Must not have a history of psychiatric illness requiring the use of psychoactive medications
    Mild Impairment (aMCI) Subject Criteria:
    1. Must be fluent in English or demonstrated proficiency in English for non-native speakers to ensure validity of test administration and findings
    2. Must be between the ages of 70 and 85 years old with high school graduate level education and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) = 0.5 – 1 and Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE): 20-25
    3. Must have an informed family member or life-partner (preferably bed-partner) will be interviewed over the phone or on the first or second visit to confirm the reliability of the subject interview.
    4. Must not have a history of psychiatric illness requiring the use of psychoactive medications

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. You have a history or diagnosis of a significant neurological condition other than Alzheimer's disease including Parkinson's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontal temporal dementia, human immunodeficiency virus, multiple sclerosis, seizures, epilepsy, stroke, ADHD, dyslexia, or severe traumatic brain injury
    2. You have a history of a primary psychotic disorder (e.g. schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder) or bipolar disorder.
    3. You have a Modified Hachinski Ischemia Scale (HIS) score greater than 4.
    4. You have a recent history (within 5 years) of alcohol or substance abuse/dependence.
    5. You have a pacemaker or other common medical devices that may interfere with the MRI scan.
    6. You have insulin dependent diabetes.
