Telomere Length and Epigenetic Changes as Biomarkers of Stress in Sexual Trauma Survivors

Brief description of study

This is a cross-sectional cohort study. Subjects with exposure to sexual trauma will be drawn from subjects enrolled in or eligible for the EMPOWER Clinic for Survivors of Sex Trafficking and Sexual Violence at Gouverneur Health (see below). Control subjects will be drawn from patients (or family) presenting for care at Gouverneur Health who do not endorse any history of sexual trauma. Once enrolled, subjects will complete questionnaires on demographics. The purpose of this study is to look at markers of stress called “telomeres” and “epigenetics” in women who have experienced sexual trauma, and in their children. This research study is divided into 2 phases. In this Phase 2, we will compare children who have developmental delays to their siblings who do not.
