Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common, painful, and debilitating form of arthritis for which no cure currently exists. The purpose of this study is to determine if colchicine is safe and effective for people with OA. Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory agent used commonly for gout. Three small studies suggest that colchicine may improve OA pain. Colchicine has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of OA. For this reason, its use in this study is considered experimental. This study is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to test whether colchicine treatment of symptomatic knee OA (SKOA) patients will lower pain scores and improve physical function.
