Quantitative Sodium MR Imaging and Proton MR Spectroscopy in Traumatic Brain Injury

Are you eligible to participate in this study?

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Diffuse Brain Injury
  • Age: Between 18 Year(s) - 99 Year(s)
  • Gender: Male or Female
  • Other Inclusion Criteria:
    Healty subjects:
    1. Subjects who are at least 18 years old
    Mild TBI subjects
    1. Subjects who are able to sign informed consent
    2. Subjects must have at least one of the following criteria:
      • Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score between 13 and 15
      • Any period of loss of consciousness for up to 30 minutes
      • Subjects reports a post-traumatic amnesia duration of = 24 hours
      • Any alteration of mental state at the time of accident (dazed, disoriented, or confused)
      • Focal neurological deficit(s) that may or may not be transient
    Moderate TBI subjects
    1. Subjects who are able to sign informed consent
    2. Subjects must have at least one of the following criteria:
      • Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score between 9 and 12
      • Any period of loss of consciousness for up to 30 minutes, but less than 24 hours
      • Duration of patient’s post-traumatic amnesia is = 24 hours and = 7 days
    3. HCAT score of = 4 or an available legally authorized representative (LAR) to sign consent on behalf of the subject

You may not be eligible for this study if the following are true:

    1. Subjects with MRI contraindications
    2. Subjects who have blast injury
    3. Subjects who have penetrating brain injury (e.g. gunshot, fragment)
    4. Subjects who are professional contact-sports player
    5. Subjects who are incarcerated or homeless
    6. Subjects who have previous been medically diagnosed moderate TBI
    7. Subjects who have been prior medically diagnosed mild TBI (concussion) within the past 2 years
    8. Subjects with neurological disorder (e.g. multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease, etc.)
    9. Subjects with psychiatric disorder (excluding depression and/or anxiety)
    10. Subjects with cancer
    11. Subjects with alcohol and/or drug dependency
