SWIFT TRIAL: SURGICAL WEIGHT-LOSS TO IMPROVE FUNCTIONAL STATUS TRAJECTORIES FOLLOWING TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY

Brief description of study

In many patients, obesity is associated with arthritis in the knee that causes pain and difficulty moving or walking, which may get worse over time as the arthritis progresses. Many patients choose TKA to reduce the knee pain and improve mobility and quality of life. However, TKA surgery in patients with obesity may have a higher risk of complications than TKA surgery in patients without obesity. Because of these concerns, patients with obesity are encouraged by many orthopedic centers to lose weight prior to undergoing TKA surgery. Several recent studies suggest that having weight loss surgery before TKA surgery may lower the risk of the TKA surgery and improve long-term outcomes in patients with obesity. The purpose of this study is to determine whether weight-loss surgery prior to TKA surgery reduces risk and improves long-term outcomes.
